The correspondence includes original Berlioz letters and over 200 copies of letters relating to Berlioz and the romantic era, written by musicians, critics, historians, and literateurs of the past century. There are many photostats of letters and manuscripts obtained from the principal libraries of the world which hold original Berlioz material. The collection includes much printed material in the form of music scores, published letters, essays, clippings, biographies, music and book catalogues, program notes, and playbills.

The papers almost exclusively concern Surguchev's life in emigration; he lived in France from the 1920s onward. Correspondents include Ivan Bunin, Nikolaĭ Evreĭnov, Aleksandr Kuprin, and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. There are manuscripts of plays, stories, and film scenarios by Surguchev in Russian, French, and English. Documents include literary contracts, and one contract signed by Sergeĭ Lifar ́concerning a film scenario by Surguchev and Ivan Lukash. There are photographs of Surguchev and of scenes from his plays, and a subject file on the Russian Chamber Theater (Kamernyĭ Teatr) in Prague, 1922-23. Among the printed materials are many clippings of pieces by Surguchev, and his play "Igra" and pamphlet "Bolśheviki v Stavropole."

The correspondence is extensive and includes letter from Jacques Maritain; Thomas Merton; Maxwell Geismar; Eldridge Cleaver; Robert Casadeus; Abraham Rattner; P.D. East; Joseph Noonan; Sarah Patton Boyle; Lillian Smith; Father August Thompson; Nell Dorr; and Brother Patrick Hart. All of his major works are represented in manuscript form (usually typescript, carbon). In addition there are many original photographs by Griffin, which he pasted throughout his extensive journal, 1950-1980. This journal is a remarkable account of his life and thoughts, extending to over 3,000 pages.

These files concern his interest in Pierre Bayle, Antoine Arlier, and the Renaissance in Provence, as well as the Romanic Review, philology, French, Spanish, and celtic studies. The correspondence includes 12 letters from Roland Barthes, 1963-1978, concerning French literature in French and American universities, and one letter from Charles Maurras and his comments on Roudiez's Columbia University dissertation (1950), CHARLES MAURRAS: GENESIS OF A REACTION; also a typescript of the translation and revision of the dissertation, MAURRAS JUSQU'À L'ACTION FRANC̦AISE, published in Paris in 1957. In addition, there are several typescript drafts and page proofs all with holograph corrections for Roudiez's translations of Julia Kristeva's DESIRE IN LANGUAGE (New York: Columbia University Press, 1980) and POWERS OF HORROR (New York: Columbia University Press, 1982); and the typescript for Roudiez's book FRENCH FICTION TODAY(New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1972)

Much of the correspondence concerns his American teaching and lecture engagements, primarily at the University of Louisville. There are also letters from his colleagues in France, including Françoise Van Rossum-Guyon, with a copy of her Introduction to an edition of Balzac's LE PÈRE GORIOT with Butor's critical letter for the publisher. There are critical and biographical manuscripts about Butor, and several printed works, each inscribed with a note by its author.
