Two volumes of papers and documents relating to the activities, history, and genealogy of the Gonzalez-Prada family, containing over 500 manuscript leaves, ca. 1750-1850. Many of the papers are official in nature, consisting of reports from lower provincial officials to the Captains General and to the Royal Governors. There are a number of royal communiques from Spain, some of which bear the seal of Charles IV or Ferdinand VII. In addition to these manuscripts there is a typescript and some printed material containing an account of the Gonzalez-Prada family and its origins with biographical notations.

The Herbert L. Matthews Papers contain the writings, correspondence, and personal papers of this American journalist, a correspondent and editorial writer for the New York Times from 1922 to 1967. Matthews' assignments spanned the world. As a journalist he covered the Italian invasion of Abyssinia in 1935 and 1936, Spain and the Spanish Civil War, Italy, India, Europe and World War II, postwar Europe, Latin America; as an editor he wrote about Vietnam, China, and Latin America.

Abstract Or Scope

Microfilm copies of manuscripts by Francisco Xavier Eugenio de Santa Cruz y Espejo (1747-1795), early Ecuadorian political figure and precursor of Ecuadorian independence. Espejo, a doctor, helped found the Escuela de Concordia in Quito. Prof. Astuto copied these manuscripts from various governmental and private libraries in Ecuador and Colombia while on a research fellowship from the Organization of American States in 1973 and on a research grant from St. John's University in 1975. The collection includes a printed volume of three of Espejo's works edited by Astuto in 1981 & his typescript (1,184 p., with his corrections) of Las Obras Educativas by Espejo.
