A. Doak Barnett papers, 1929-2010, bulk 1940-1999

The Arthur Doak Barnett Papers consist of personal and professional documents created and amassed by a leading scholar and government advisor on United States-China policy and relations in the 20th century. Barnett wrote, co-authored, or edited more than 20 books on China and Asia. His papers chronicle his academic, reporting, and government careers, plus his writings and travels throughout Asia and China from the 1940s through the 1990s.

Subseries I.1: Early Career, 1929-1961

Early Career contains correspondence and other material from Barnett's undergraduate and graduate studies at Yale University and work as a correspondent for the Chicago Daily News and associate with the American Universities Field Staff. Included are academic transcripts from grade school through graduate school, Yale course notebooks, and several annuals or yearbooks. Barnett's Daily News dispatches are contained in Suberies IV.1.

Subseries I.2: Columbia University, 1961-1969

Columbia University contains correspondence and other records during Barnett's tenure at Columbia, along with lecture notes, syllabi, and administrative records for courses taught there. Also in this subseries are correspondence and other documents pertaining to speeches, interviews, and papers given by Barnett via television, radio and conferences he attended. Of special note are handwritten drafts, final copies, and correspondence pertaining to his 1966 statements before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and House Subcommittee on the Far East and Pacific plus records of his role on the Asian Task Force for Hubert H. Humphrey's unsuccessful Presidential campaign in 1968. This subseries also contains records of Barnett's fellowship year in Hong Kong, 1964-1965, to study Chinese Communist political systems at the local level.

Subseries I.3: Brookings Institution, 1966-1982

Brookings Institution consists of correspondence, grant proposals, board records, and related documents during Barnett's years as a senior fellow in Brookings' Foreign Policy Studies Program. Included are correspondence between Barnett and government officials including Presidents Johnson, Nixon, and Carter; members of Congress; and National Security Advisor and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Documents cover Barnett's views on Taiwan and on relations between the US, China, and the Soviet Union, as well as the Nixon Administration's rapprochement with China. Records cover meetings Barnett organized at Brookings of academicians and government officials on US China policies. Also here are letters written to Barnett from Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine, media representatives, academic colleagues, and others after Barnett's heart attack in 1971. There are documents on Jimmy Carter's Presidential candidacy, State Department officials and members of Congress. Materials also include reports on a 1980 meeting of the US-People's Republic of China Joint Commission on Cooperation in Science and Technology, which was held in China and the subsequent 1981 Brookings-Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Conference on Political, Economic, and Security Trends and Problems in East Asia, held in Williamsburg, Virginia

A. E. Housman letters, 1922-1958

Correspondence by and relating to Housman and to his brother, Laurence Housman. Nearly all of the letters were written to Cyril Clemens, who was working on a proposed biography of A.E. Housman. The collection includes six letters from A.E. Housman and an important group of 94 letters from Laurence Housman, which contain comments on his brother's life and activities, religious beliefs, reading, and manuscripts. There are 45 letters from relatives and persons closely related to A.E. Housman, among them his sisters, Clemence Housman and Katharine E. Symons, his publisher, Grant Richards, and his associates at Oxford University, James T. Nance and Alfred W. Pollard. Also included in the collection are twelve manuscripts, the most noteworthy of which are two signed poems by Laurence Housman and a 4-line verse in Lord Dunsany's holograph entitled "A. E. Housman.".

Agnes Kun and Antal Hidas Papers, 1915-1987

The papers comprise the correspondence of Agnes Kun (1915-1990), translator, and Antal Hidas (1899-1980), Hungarian poet, with prominent Russian poets and writers; Antal Hidas's memoirs; and manuscripts of translations from Hungarian and original poetry by famous Russian authors.

Subseries II.2: Writings by Others, 1940-1987, undated

The Subseries contains mainly holograph manuscript and typescripts of original poetry and translations by famous Russian poets, such as Boris Pasternak, Nikolai Chukovskii, Mariia Petrovykh, Semen Kirsanov, Boris Slutskii, David Samoilov, Leonid Pervomaiskii, Leonid Martynov, Vsevolod Rozhdestvenskii, Andrei Voznesenskii, Nikolai Zabolotskii. Zabolotskii's writings include a bound typed manuscript "Stolbtsy i poemy. Stikhotvoreniia." N. Zabolotskii compiled this book of his poems in 1958 and considered it a complete edition of his poetry. This handmade book is one of seven copies. The Subseries also includes memoirs of Ivan Borisov and Ferenc Jancsik, and Semen Budennyi's essay on Bela Kun. There is also a photograph of Ivan Borisov, which remains with his memoirs, and three drawings of Leonid Martynov, which are stored along with his writings.

Audio Cassettes, 1966-2007. Subseries V.1, Audio Cassettes consist of Albert Ellis's historic Friday night workshops figure, along with lectures, symposia, and patient sessions. Friday Night Workshops figure prominently. The desciptions for each cassette are transcibed exactly from the tape itself, or accompanying notes. These transciptions include Ellis's own system of abbreviations and acronyms.

Subseries V.2: Reel to Reel Audio, 1953-1975

Subseries V.2, Reel to Reel Audio include session recordings of individuals and groups, talks, presentations, lectures, and interviews on radio and television programs, including several by Mike Wallace. Panels and workshops, conventions, Cooper Union Forums, volumes of the American Association of Psychologists Tape Library, of the Institute for Rational Living Tape Library figure prominently. The desciptions for each reel to reel are transcibed exactly from the tape itself, or accompanying notes. These transciptions include Ellis's own system of abbreviations and acronyms.

Aleksandra Gol'shtein Papers, 1876-1937

Most of the collection consists of letters to Golśteĭn; there are some as well to her second husband, Vladimir A. Gol'shtein. The materials reflect Gol'shtein ties to Russian liberalism and populism and also to both French and Russian art and literature. There are groups of cataloged letters from Renʹe Arcos (15), Mykhailo Drahomaniv (52), Andrʹe Fontainas (31), Renʹe Ghil (32), Viacheslav Ivanov (17), Petr Lavrov (49), Vladimir Vernadskii (20), and Maksimilian Voloshin (29). There are also items by Jurgis Baltrušaitis, Henri Martin Barzun, Henri Bergson, Ivan Bunin, Sergei Diagilev, Paul Fort, Vladislav Khodasevich, Aristide Maillol, and Odilon Redon. Manuscripts are chiefly by Golśhteĭn, and include her memoirs on Drahomaniv. There are also poems by Voloshin and by Konstantin Bal'mont. Subject files deal with such topics as the Russian famine of 1891-92 and the Russian Liberation Committee at the time of the Civil War. There is a copy of Gol'shtein's book, "Serf Life in Russia."

Letters received by A. V. Bakhrakh which discuss 20th century Russian literature, contemporary Slavic studies, and Russian emigre publishing activities. Correspondents include Andrei Belyi (Boris Bugaev), Ivan Bunin, Kornei Chukovskii, Andre Gide and Boris Pilniak. There are over 300 letters by Gleb Struve wtitten from 1964 to 1983, which cover the above topics as well as Struve's personal and professional life. There are both letters and manuscripts by Vladislav Khodasevich, Aleksei Remizov and Marina Tsvetaeva.

The collection contains significant documents of the "Mladorossy" movement.
