This sub-series consists of faculty members, administrator and staff portraits. Folders are arranged alphabetically by last name of the person.

This sub-series consists of prints depicting campus life and features as well student life. Folders are arranged alphabetically by title.

This sub-series consists of five 11 x 14 prints – three of one particular campus feature and three color images created for use in the BROADWAY LOCAL brochure.

The general correspondence is arranged in alphabetical order and contains primarily correspondence sent and received by the university librarians, along with other library staff. Individually named and general alphabetical files are arranged in one alphabetical sequence by correspondent name or subject heading and chronologically within each letter of the alphabet by year. Notable subjects in this subseries include correspondence on budgets, library statistics, collections, and staff. Important subjects filed under sub-files are interspersed within the general alphabetical correspondence and are noted parenthetically.

This subseries contains letters relating to employee salaries and personnel files during the period from January 1900 to November 1916. Within this subseries, items are filed alphabetically under the individual's or organization's name. Includes sub-files on Barnard College, along with related personnel and administrative files for Miss M.O. Cox, Frederick W. Erb (Loan Department), Miss Harriet B. Prescott (Catalog Department), Dr. V.G. Simkhovitch (Bibliography), and Miss Margaret Van Zandt (Order Department). For salary letters outside this range, or additional information, such as salary reports and library statistics, consult Subseries I.1, General Correspondence.

This subseries includes correspondence between the head librarian and the university president. In addition to correspondence between James H. Canfield, William Dawson Johnston, Seth Low, and Nicholas Butler, this subseries includes annual library reports and reorganization plans and special folders on the October 1907 Inspection Trip and a special file of letters between the librarian and the president on Carnegie Retirement Pensions, with extracts from correspondence with department heads.

Subseries 1. Miscellaneous contains published materials, blank forms and other items.

Subseries 2. Subject Files were maintained as a group of informative material on various subjects directly or indirectly relating to the Committee's work. For example, the subject files have a folder of minutes of the University Committee on Rules of Conduct. These are records of another committee, but copies were kept by the JCDA for reference purposes. Of particular significance is the Deane and Connor Paper on Discipline written by Herbert A. Deane, vice provost for academic planning, and James E. Connor, assistant professor of government. The working paper evaluated the disciplinary system created by the University after the 1968 protests. The Students for a Restructured University (SRU) have a response to this paper in the subject files, as well. The 25 Man Rule documents part of the discussion and controversy over the rule. The rule revolved around the number of spectators allowed at tribunal hearings. The 25 Man Rule would allow a maximum of 25 spectators at any given hearing. For more information on the 25 Man Rule see Series I. Governance for minutes relating to the Rule. The folder of the "Temple Committee Reports" documents some of the work done by the Temple Committee, a Special Committee of the Trustees of Columbia University, established by the Trustees on May 1, 1968 in order to "study and recommend changes in the basic structure of the University." The Committee was named after its chairman Alan H. Temple.

Subseries 3. Chronological Files appear to have been created by the JCDA administrative assistant who compiled all of the important correspondence and documentation for a given time period and bound it together chronologically for reference use. Therefore, the material in the chronological files is mostly duplicate material found in other areas of the records.

This sub-series is composed of correspondence files originating from various offices and personnel within the Division of Government Aided Research. The sub-series is arranged alphabetically by folder title and then chronologically where applicable. An index to the correspondence for 1944-1945 alphabetical correspondence files is also included. War Filing – Alpha 1944-1945 consists of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence regarding contracts (funding, termination of, extension of, amendments to), personnel issues (salaries, appointments and terminations), compensation, activities on campus (military training), space issues (including restoration of space to the University from military), new selective service issues and deferment of Columbia employees. Reports found in these files include two from James Kip Finch, one regarding Engineering, Science, and Management War Training activities from July 1, 1943 to June 30, 1944 and a final report of the War Training Program at C.U. dated 24 March 1945. Information regarding classification of documents and research and Trustee minutes reporting on completed contracts and lists of people involved (Oct. 2, 1944, Dec 4, 1944, May 7, 1945) are also included. Correspondence of note includes: letters with General Electric regarding contract work, correspondence concerning the New London Labs, Professor Edwin Matzke correspondence of 27-29 September 1944 concerning the return of valuables in storage to campus, and correspondence with the War Manpower Commission. Also addressed is the restoration of SAM Labs space (found in "M-S" file) and the restoration of Chandler Museum to the University.

This sub-series contains documents and correspondence related to the personnel clearance of individuals (both men and women) involved in government aided/sponsored research conducted under the auspices of Columbia University. The materials are very much of a routine nature, consisting primarily of form letters and completed applications. Among the types of documents found in these files are: oaths of secrecy, patent agreements, signed copies of The Espionage Act, personal information/qualification records, letters/memos regarding salary and appointments (some note the number of the government contract), cross reference memos and termination certificates. There is sometimes other kinds of correspondence, such as letters advocating deferment from selective service, accounts and analysis of expenses/salary, reimbursement, and library privileges.

This subseries contains the materials generated by the Alliance's projects concerning the built environment and infrastructure in Morningside Heights. Included are clippings and information on certain buildings and facilities of interest to the organization, as well as pamphlets and information about the issues involved with redevelopment, public housing, and slum clearance. The Alliance also kept extensive records on the condition of buildings in the neighborhood and the history of their ownership--block by block, house by house in most cases--and these are included here. Those buildings of interest that showed up in the City's court calendars for various complaints--usually unsafe or unsanitary conditions--were also heavily tracked, the documentation of which has been retained. Finally, records on the construction and finance of Morningside Gardens are found in this series as well.

This subseries is made up of records of the Alliance's work to increase services to the community in a variety of areas, but mostly in services and activities to be provided to neighborhood youth outside of schools. Appearing here are directories and inventories of neighborhood services, publications on existing city and state-wide services by both public and private enterprise, and publications and plans about how to increase offerings of community-service programs within the neighborhood. As part of this function the Alliance also tracked and recorded services and programs offered by the sponsoring institutions--such as continuing education offered at Columbia University for community members--and put together many services of its own--such as the Stone Gym Youth Center, several summer camps and activities, and several sports leagues. The records of these endeavors--including contracts, receipts, registrations, and publications--are found in this subseries.

This subseries contains mostly reports and their contributing materials generated by the Alliance to assist and influence the GRNP process. Publications which preceded the existence of the GNRP--such as materials on slum clearance and on Title I housing--have also been occasionally filed in this subseries, presumably as source material for the overall character and construction of the neighborhood. A large collection of news clippings on the plan have also been retained here. The GNRP was carried out through many different individual projects, which generated documentation for themselves--most of which can be found here. The Morningside Heights Core Area Study and its contributing materials have also been filed in this subseries.

Contains general information on Columbia University's efforts to introduce and instruct students for engagement in the war.

Consists of correspondence, which appears to be from the Office of the Secretary regarding the SATC as well as course information. Correspondence is filed alphabetically by surname. See also the oversized folder "Collections Oversize-World War I Collection-Student Army Training Corps" for advertising posters and schedules of courses.

Contains enrollment cards, which have valuable information on trainees. Also included are files for resignations, transfers, and assignments, arranged alphabetically by surname.

Correspondence in this series is arranged by year and month.

Alphabetical correspondence is not only organized by last name, but also by topic, such as "Commencement," "Chicago, University of," and "Proof Reading." In the alphabetical subseries, there is considerable correspondence with Kay Runge of the University of Heidelberg. The folders of "Alphabetical-Moszkowski, Steven A." and "Miscellaneous-John Wiley and Sons" contain correspondence regarding,Beta Decay, a book co-authored by Wu and Moszkowski and published by John Wiley Sons Publishers in 1965. Folder "Miscellaneous-Fan Mail" contains some requests for autographs and photos of Wu, but similar letters can be found throughout the chronological correspondence files as well. The folder of correspondence of Glenn R. Schleede contains a photograph from the White House of President Ford signing the bill to create the Office of Science and Technology Policy in 1976. Folder "Miscellaneous-Job Inquiries Declined" contains letters to and from Wu and other faculty in the Physics Department of Columbia University regarding teaching positions and are arranged alphabetically by surname of the person applying. Similar correspondence can be found throughout the chronological correspondence. The folder "Miscellaneous-Free Circulation of Scientists" focuses on the resolution of that name passed by the International Council of Scientific Unions regarding issues like the Soviet scientists who were being prevented from leaving the country. In a letter dated April 9, 1975, Wu declined an invitation from President McGill to serve on the Ad Hoc Committee of Columbia to study comparative salaries of men and women.
