This subseries contains reports, correspondence, minutes, and other information regarding various committees at the University including the Committee on Buildings and Grounds and the Committee on Education. Minutes of various committees are incomplete.

This subseries consists of letters to and from Andrew Cordier before he began working at Columbia University. They include information on his other professional interests such as his work at Manchester College in the 1920s through the 1940s, his work with the American Friends Service Committee and Brethren Service Committee during World War II, assisting refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Some of the correspondence relates to particular refugees and includes their curriculum vitae and photographs; these photographs have remained in their original location. Correspondence from the early 1930s includes information about Cordier's involvement in various Indiana state elections. The folder "Personal, 1932" contains some of Cordier's speeches in addition to those found in Series IV. Speeches and Writings. Note that the personal correspondence is incomplete, with some years missing entirely.

This subseries includes press releases, speeches, papers, and radio addresses by Cordier from the 1930s through the 1970s. See also Correspondence, Personal, 1932 for additional speeches.

is comprised of maps, floor plans, press clippings, press releases, correspondence, reports, pamphlets, memoranda, notes, proposals, and brochures relating primarily to the buildings (past, present and proposed but never built) located on the Morningside Heights campus. This series also has files of information concerning campus planning and development, as well as files detailing specific features found on the Morningside Heights campus – such as artwork, sculpture, gates, landscaping, and walkways.

is primarily photocopies of correspondence to and from university president Seth Low discussing the planning and development of Columbia's Morningside Heights campus. Correspondence is mainly with the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, who designed this campus, but also includes some letters between President Low, Columbia administrators and architecture professors. There is also one file of correspondence, again primarily photocopied, from President Low's successors discussing aspects of continued campus development.

consists of photocopied maps of Columbia University's various campuses and real estate holdings (e.g. Reid Hall in Paris, France and Camp Columbia in Connecticut) as collected by the Facilities Department. Also include maps detailing the surrounding neighborhood in Morningside Heights. Floor plans are original and arranged by building name for a particular year. Both maps and floor plans were removed from the binders in which they were originally kept.

consists of Meyer's personal file and general professional correspondence.

includes copies of Meyer's speeches and presentation papers.

consists of a set of files on task forces, reports, training sessions, and other projects involving Meyer. These files include material on Meyer's work with the New York Bureau of Child Welfare (1960-1962).

The first 318 cubic feet of correspondence and other records dating from 1890 to 1971 were filed under general alphabetical headings. Each letter of the alphabet is divided into chronological groups. For example, files labeled A-Az for 1930-1931 are followed by the A-Az files for 1931-1932 and so on. This sub-series contains the same types of materials relating to the same categories of subject as the rest of Central Files. It appears as though records were filed under general alphabetical headings when only a small amount of correspondence was received or when the subject of the correspondence was not considered to be important at the time. In spite of this, sub-series I.1 contains many substantial records as well as materials from significant persons and should not be overlooked by researchers.

Subseries consisting of records to, from, or about a person filed under the person's name. This is the only portion of Central Files that contains detailed descriptions of the contents of files. If a desired personal name does not appear in this sub-series, or if the name is found but the time period of interest falls outside the date range given for the folder, it may still be possible to find relevant materials in Series I.1 General Alphabetical, through the use of the Central Files card index, or by confining the search to a very specific date range.

Subseries I.1 consists primarily of the general correspondence of the Dean and materials related to Columbia College students during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and covers the period encompassing 1910 through 1923. Three deanships are represented in this subseries. John Henry Van Amringe (CC, 1860; 1st Dean, 1894-1910), Frederick P. Keppel (CC, 1899; 2nd Dean, 1910-1917); and Herbert E. Hawkes (Acting Dean, 1917, 3rd Dean, 1918-1942).

Subseries I.2 encompasses the chronologically arranged correspondence of the Dean from 1926 through 1989. This subseries consists of a variety of materials. To illustrate, included in this subseries are some papers of Frank D. Fackenthal, who served as secretary (1910-1937), provost (1937-1948) and acting president of the University (1945-1948). A review of Fackenthal's incoming and outgoing correspondence provides insights into his role in Columbia College's administration. A statement created by Columbia College on the occasion of Fackenthal's death is also contained this subseries. The subseries comprises, in turn, the speeches, articles and related correspondence about the topic of male college students written by Nicholas M. McKnight, who served as associate dean (1931-1943) and dean (1943-1957). Along with the correspondence in subseries I.1, the letters of Herbert E. Hawkes (Acting Dean, 1917, 3rd Dean, 1918-1942) cover the period (1928-1943) and consist primarily of incoming and outgoing messages between Hawkes and other faculty members on the topics of student organizations, student life and student requests. Additional papers in this subseries cover Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's tenure as President of the University (1948-1953). The Eisenhower correspondence reveals the fact that the general's interaction with Columbia College administrators and students was limited because of his outside commitments. Included also in this subseries is a copy of a speech Eisenhower delivered to incoming freshmen in December 1950.

Subseries III.1 Committee on Instruction (COI), 1908-2022, bulk dates: 1930-1979 is arranged overall in alphabetical order in (3) broad subject groupings: (1) Budgets (1960-1988), (2) Curriculum Review (1975-1989) and (3) Meeting Minutes (1908-1931, 1974-1976; 1979-1988). Under these three comprehensive categories, the folders within the series are organized overall in chronological order. Please note that additional Committee on Instruction (COI) materials are located in Series I and Series IV. Note that there are no COI minutes for 1996-1997 or 2002-2003.

Organized chronologically, this subseries consists of event fliers, income statements, inventories, receipts, ticket sale reports, and handwritten memos for the gay dances organized by the Student Homophile League (SHL), Gay People at Columbia-Barnard (GPCB), and Columbia Gay and Lesbian Alliance (CGLA) in the 1970s and 1980s. The earliest material dates to 1970, when the organization was still known as the Student Homophile League. These dances were well known throughout New York City's gay community and were attended by non-students as well as Columbia students. The final folder in the subseries consists of a blank copy of a 1986 questionnaire in which dance attendees are asked to provide personal information, evaluate their experiences of the dances and suggest improvements.

This subseries consists of materials pertaining to educational programming and research initiatives completed by Gay People at Columbia-Barnard (GPCB) and Columbia Gay and Lesbian Alliance (CGLA). The subseries is organized by educational event type, with folder contents organized chronologically. The first files consist of fliers, handouts, syllabi and readings for discussion groups organized by GPCB and CGLA, specifically consciousness raising groups in the 1970s and study groups in the 1980s. Some of the readings are annotated. Following the discussion group materials are memos, fliers, discussion plans, and reports for GPCB's "floor raps," in which GPCB members would lead an information session about homosexuality to residents of a dormitory floor. The memos consist of internal communications reflecting on the success of particular events as well as communications with residence staff. The following files consist of two 1973 and 1974 research initiatives, two separate blank surveys and subsequent reports about sexual experience and gay life at Columbia University. The series concludes with fliers for miscellaneous educational panels, including completed questionnaires for panels on "Coming Out" and "Gays in Business," as well as collected lecture notes, syllabi, and a proposed essay prize pertaining to gay studies at the university.

This subseries consists of materials pertaining to social activities organized by Gay People at Columbia-Barnard (GPCB) and Columbia Gay and Lesbian Alliance (CGLA), divided into three categories: the gay lounge, film screenings, and miscellaneous social activities. The subseries largely consists of internal memos, correspondence, clippings, and press statements pertaining to GPCB's nationally reported struggle to achieve official administrative recognition for the gay lounge, ca. 1971-1973. This collection of materials includes communications with university deans and trustees as well as minutes from a meeting of the Board of Trustees in which GPCB member Morty Manford asked the board for assistance in receiving administrative recognition. The subseries also includes correspondence and fliers related to film screenings either organized by or receiving support from GPCB, including a handout for a post-film discussion of Boys in the Band (1970), a drama about a group of gay friends in New York City controversial for its arguable reproduction of harmful stereotypes. Invited to participate in the screening by its organizers, GPCB planned a discussion that aimed to foster a more critical take on a film the group wouldn't have personally chosen to screen due to ideological reservations. The end of the subseries consists of promotional fliers for miscellaneous social events organized by the GPCB as well as a folder of undated photos labeled "Author's Night at Lounge."

This subseries contains medal related to student activities on campus such as the Peithologian and Philolexian Debate Societies, fraternities, and others.

This subseries contains medals awarded as academic prizes to students from 1833 to 1845. The medals are organized by recipient's last name. The subject area for the award is sometimes translated from the Latin; for others, the abbreviated Latin subject is rendered as it appears on the medal.
