Correspondence, financial records, and legal documents of the Barnard family of Sheffield, Massachusetts. Frederick A. P. Barnard (1809-1889) was President of Columbia College from 1864-1889. His brother John Gross Barnard (1815-1882) was a career officer in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers who served as a Brevet Major General for the Union during the Civil War. Anna Eliza Barnard was John Gross Barnard's second wife, who raised four children and managed the family's affairs during her husband's last illness, 1879-1882. Augustus Porter Barnard, the son of John G. Barnard and his first wife, was a mining engineer.

Correspondence, notes, and manuscripts including items that relate to most of Agnew's professional activities, are especially rich in materials that deal with the treatment of eye diseases during the latter half of the 19th century. An interesting sidelight of the collection is a group of finely detailed woodblocks and steel plates that Agnew used to illustrate his published articles.

Writings and memorabilia of Straus. The most interesting item in the collection is the letter from the President of Columbia College, Frederick A.P. Barnard, to President Ulysses S. Grant, dated 25 June 1869, recommending Straus, then a student at Columbia College, for a government appointment. Also, five manuscripts of poems, ten volumes of writings by and about Straus, and three scrapbooks of clippings, one of which covers 1909, the period of his ambassadorship in Constantinople.
