Burns' American Diary, an Englishman's view of American society, is the fruit of his Laura Spellman Rockefeller fellowship, 1926-1928. Very descriptive of his tour of U.S. and Canada (Quebec, Vancouver), numerous illustrations and clippings are laid in. In addition to his economic and social concerns, of particular interest are the architecture of major cities, their theatrical life, their politics; his visits to certain universities (Harvard, University of Chicago, Stanford), and his long visit to Washington with other Rockefeller fellows and their ongoing meetings and discussions with members of the Federal Board of Trade and professors from all over at what was to become the Brookings Institute. Competition in business was his major interest; it is discussed in the Diary, and his 1936 book, The Decline of Competition, is said to be a major influence in undergraduate teaching in the U.S. Included in the Collection is a cassette of his memorial service at Columbia, 24 April 1981.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, and printed materials of and relating to Woodberry. Included are letters from Woodberry to Melville H. Cane, John Erskine, John S. Harrison, Robert Underwood Johnson, and Joel E. Spingarn. There are 330 letters from Woodberry to Harry Harkness Flagler telling of Woodberry's daily life in Beverly, Mass. and of his travels in Europe and Africa. Additional correspondence, notes, and printed materials relate to Woodberry's life, writings, teaching career, retirement, the controversy in 1902 that led to his resignation from the Columbia University faculty in 1904, the bequest of his books to Harvard University and Phillips Exeter Academy, the Poetry Room dedicated in his honor at Harvard University, an exhibit of Woodberriana at the New York Public Library and the Woodberry Society. There are more than fifty manuscripts of his essays and poems. Among the printed materials are his poems, essays, and book reviews, most of which have been cut from THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY. Other printed materials are about Woodberry, reviews of his books, obituaries, memorials, and books, many inscribed.

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, and printed material of Mansfield. Mansfield was an officer of the U.S. Office of Price Administration (O.P.A.), which governed rationing programs during World War II,1942-1945, and the Office's historian, 1946-1947; these papers deal primarily with Mansfield's activities in these capacities. The collection includes studies done under the supervision of John Kenneth Galbraith at Harvard University in 1950, as well as copies of correspondence from Galbraith and other officers of the O.P.A.

Correspondence files of Roberts Brothers, pertaining to all departments, editorial, production, advertising, and sales. Also, some miscellaneous letters and documents, unrelated to Roberts Brothers, which deal with various legal matters, including those of Frederick D. Ely and of William A. Dunn, from 1838 until 1932, and letters to the Secretary of Harvard University from 1900 to 1907.

Correspondence, manuscripts, subject files and research notes of Sigmund Diamond. Included among the correspondence are Diamond's letters to and from various distinguished members of Columbia University and other academic insitutions, as well as correspondence with many noted sociologists and historians. Included in the manuscripts is Diamond's "In Quest." The subject files comprise material from Diamond's tenure at Columbia and include some material pertaining to his forced departure from Harvard in the 1950's due to his previous communist affiliation, and his active role in maintaining the efficacy of the Freedom of Information Act. The research files include microfilms and notes.
