Included are Cerf's personal correspondence files, 1929-1945, and the diaries and scrapbooks which he maintained from his school days throughout his active career. The diaries, in date-book format, contain terse notes on Cerf's meetings with authors and friends, on his travels and publishing activities; the scrapbooks contain correspondence and photographs, as well as memorabilia and printed items, and were annotated by Cerf and his wife, Phyllis Fraser Cerf Wagner. Also in the collection are manuscripts and proofs for Cerf's books including "The Laugh's on Me""Treasury of Atrocious Puns""The Sound of Laughter""Stories to Make You Feel Better", and "At Random: the Reminiscences of Bennett Cerf", which was edited by Phyllis Cerf Wagner and Albert Erskine, 1977. The papers also include condolence letters written at the time of Cerf's death, photographs and photo albums,certificates and awards, and miscellaneous printed material, including Random House and Modern Library catalogues. Records of the Citizens Committee for the Protection of the Environment (CCPE) include correspondence, memoranda, reports, statements, notes, news releases, U.S. Atomic Energy/Nuclear Regulatory Commission hearing records, and printed material. The correspondence contains letters from supporters, members of other environmental groups, New York State legislators, U.S. senators and congressmen, scientists, and CCPE's attorney for the Indian Point hearings. Chief correspondents of the group are Larry Bogart, Executive Director, Dr. George Candreva, President, and Irene P. Dickinson (Mrs. Leon A.), Executive Secretary and Coordinator, whose file these are. There are numerous letters from Congressmen John G. Dow, Richard Ottinger, and Peter Peyser. The cataloged correspondence contains three letters from Senator Jacob K. Javits, and one each from Senator Edmund S. Muskie, Senator Margaret Chase Smith, and Louis J. Lefkowitz, New York State Attorney General.

The collection is primarily correspondence files, both personal and professional, along with book reviews, awards and diplomas, letters of condolence on his death, clippings, and correspondence, manuscripts and printed materials relating to THE STREAM OF HISTORY. The correspondence relates specifically to the third edition. The manuscripts are typed and holograph inserts for the third edition and possibly for the second edition as well. Among the manuscripts are twenty-two notebooks containing holograph notes and drafts of chapters. The printed material consists of one copy of THE STREAM OF HISTORY, 1934 edition.

There are many letters from Anton Kartashev; other correspondents include Mikhaĭl Karpovich, Philip Mosely, and Vasiliĭ Zenḱovskiĭ. There are manuscripts by Kartashev, Karpovich, and George Vernadsky, as well as by Novit︠s︡kiĭ himself on the Orthodox Church and the emigration. Subject files touch on his organizational activities. There are photographs of Novit︠s︡kiĭ with Dwight Eisenhower, Nelson Rockefeller, and Jacob Javits, and also of Zenḱovskiĭ. The sound tape is an interview with Novit︠s︡kiĭ on Voice of America about his father-in-law, Georgiĭ Shavelśkiĭ. Some of the materials concern Novit︠s︡kiĭ's brother, Evgeniĭ, and wife, Marii︠a︡.

The manuscripts include typescripts of Sykes' published and unpublished novels, monographs, plays, short stories, and articles. Among these are The Perennial Avant Garde, The Cool Millennium, and The Hidden Remnant. Sykes' notes and notebooks span the period from the early 1930s to 1980, and include preliminary ideas and sketches for his books, as well as autobiographical material. A small number of documents concern Sykes' wartime work in the U.S. Government Office of War Information. Course-related material including writings and correspondence of students taught by Sykes between 1962 and 1975 at the New School and as an adjunct professor at Columbia University. Printed materials consist of numerous reviews of Sykes' books, in addition to offprints and articles by Sykes. Included as well are printed materials about or connected with Sykes, offprints of articles inscribed to him, and many volumes from his library. The substantial correspondence series includes personal letters and correspondence with agents and publishers relating to his books. Correspondents include Harold Clurman, Aaron Copland, Lawrence Durrell, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Francis Steegmuller, as well as a number of Sykes' students. There is extensive correspondence between Sykes and the artist John Hartell from 1927 to 1983.

Correspondence, manuscripts, dispatches, documents, clippings and other printed materials concerning his career as an editor and correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune in Moscow, Berlin and New York, as a staff member of the Institute of Pacific Relations from 1932 to 1934, as deputy director in the Office of War Information overseas branch, 1941-44, as an owner and editor of the New York Star, 1948-49, as an instructor in communications at Sarah Lawrence College, 1950-1951, as a book editor at Simon and Schuster, Publishers, 1951-1970, and as an author and translator.

The files contain much material of the League of Women Voters of New York State as well, and some material pertaining to the national organization. The files document the League's activities in the areas of voter registration, election reform, New York City government, foreign policy, ecology, and numerous other concerns, and contain the records of city, state, and national conventions, annual reports, and Board and Council minutes. Major correspondents include Emanuel Teller, Stanley M. Isaacs, Jacob K. Javits, Robert F. Kennedy, Edward I. Koch, John Vliet Lindsay, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Anna Lord Strauss, and Percy E. Sutton.
