A. E. Housman letters, 1922-1958
2 boxesCorrespondence by and relating to Housman and to his brother, Laurence Housman. Nearly all of the letters were written to Cyril Clemens, who was working on a proposed biography of A.E. Housman. The collection includes six letters from A.E. Housman and an important group of 94 letters from Laurence Housman, which contain comments on his brother's life and activities, religious beliefs, reading, and manuscripts. There are 45 letters from relatives and persons closely related to A.E. Housman, among them his sisters, Clemence Housman and Katharine E. Symons, his publisher, Grant Richards, and his associates at Oxford University, James T. Nance and Alfred W. Pollard. Also included in the collection are twelve manuscripts, the most noteworthy of which are two signed poems by Laurence Housman and a 4-line verse in Lord Dunsany's holograph entitled "A. E. Housman.".

Among the letters is an autograph letter by Dickens and copies of several Dickens letters to the publishers Lea & Blanchard. Many of the illustrations are portraits of Dickens while others are illustrations for his novels and stories, including numerous illustrations of scenes from dramatic versions of his works as well as some playbills for these productions.

A manuscript genealogy of early English families, primarily of the 13th century, probably deals with his ancestors. There is also a photograph of his common-law wife, Kate Lyon Forman, and biographical material on their daughter, Helen Forman.

1 boxLetters to Fletcher, including four letters from Richard Hughes, and twenty-five from Dorothy Leigh Sayers, mostly about the Dante editions which she bought from the Fletchers; seven letters from Samuel Beckett; and letters from the Sitwell brothers primarily concerning items purchased from the Fletchers: Osbert, 142 letters and postcards concerning books purchased, and Sacheverell, 168 letters concerning music covers, engraved writing paper, costume and ballet drawings, etc. purchased as well as books. Also, twenty-one letters and post cards from Eric Gill, who designed and printed a wedding announcement for Mr. Fletcher; and eighteen letters from Will Ransom, dealing with American and English publishers and bookdealers.
