Abstract Or Scope

Personal letters written by Phoenix to friends and associates, and letters which Phoenix collected as autograph specimens, ranging in date from 1554 (Melanchthon) to 1933 (Franklin D. Roosevelt). Over half of Phoenix's own letters are addressed to Josiah Collins Pumpelly (1839-1920), many others are to Henry Thayer Drowne (1822-1897). The material is dated from various places in the United States and Europe and contains accounts of Phoenix's travels and comments on yachting, books, the theater, and friends. There is a series of Presidential letters ranging from Washington to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Also, an engraved portrait of Phoenix.

Correspondence, manuscripts, reports, documents, and printed materials relating to the Board of Economic Warfare. The correspondence, mostly carbon copies, is to and from Milo Perkins, Morris S. Rosenthal, Henry A. Wallace, and other personnel of the Board. The reports of field agents and instructions to purchasing agents provides illuminating insight into the activities of the Board. The correspondence is mainly with members of the Office of Imports, while the reports and documents are from all branches of the Board.

Correspondence, notes, articles, reports, and speeches of Gildersleeve, including materials relating to the United Nations Conference in San Francisco, 1945, the Dumbarton Oaks Conference, the International Federation of University Women, the American Association of University Women, the American Council on Education, and the Near East College Association. The most note-worthy item in the collection is a letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, appointing Dean Gildersleeve to serve as a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Charter Conference of the United Nations. The collection also contains some material relating to Barnard College affairs.

Working files for the book SPECIAL ENVOY TO CHURCHILL AND STALIN, 1914-1946 by William Averell Harriman and Elie Abel, containing typescript drafts with handwritten corrections of Harriman's recollections; typescript notes; photocopies of American, British, and Soviet (in translation) diplomatic correspondence, memoranda, and reports; speeches and other writings by Harriman; and related background materials. The period covered is 1941-1946 and 1951-1954. Among the photocopies are letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Edward Stettinius, Harry Hopkins, Dean Acheson, Charles Bohlen, Joseph Stalin, Vyacheslav Molotov, Andrei Vyshinsky, Winston Churchill, and Anthony Eden. Also, five letters from Harriman to Abel written in 1973-1974, concerning the details of writing this book (these are the only letters cataloged in this collection).
