Academic Appointment Records, 1890s-1990

Abstract Or Scope

Originally compiled by the Office of the Secretary and later by the Academic Appointments Office, this card catalogue contains a record of all appointment letters sent to faculty members beginning in the 1890s. The cards include the appointees' name, degrees, and a record of each appointment (rank, school and academic year). For faculty and officers of research, the last date on the cards is June 30, 1990. For officers of administration, there are cards with information through July 1987. The cards are divided between inactive (last appointment ended before June 1990) and active (still at Columbia in 1990). The active appointments are also subdivided by school or division.

Academic costumes and textiles collection, 1820s-2000s

This collection consists primarily of academic robes and hoods of various Columbia professors and administrators, especially those given to these individuals for honorary degrees at other universities. The collection also contains some other textile materials, including the Women's Banner or Butler Library Banner (in two parts), Columbia College banners and flags, and some crew sweaters. Additional textiles can be found in the University Artifacts Collection (UA#0016).

Academic eminence records, 1952-1956

This collection consists of the materials used to compile the report, Columbia's Academic Eminence: A Report by the University Development Plan Committee's Subcommittee on Academic Eminence, 1954-1955. There are surveys for each academic department (Philosophy) and "field of learning" (Ethics, Logic, Metaphysics). There are also some subcommitee records: minutes, correspondence, outlines, and drafts of the final report.

This collection consists of the records of the Academic Review Committee of the Faculty of the Arts and Sciences from the 1990s. It includes copies of the internal and external assessments as well as some departmental self-studies. The files include the Academic Review Committee's final report with recommendations for the department.

Air Force ROTC photograph collection, 1955-1956

The collection comprises a large Proof Album with multiple photographs (circa Spring 1955). This album contains several pages of proofs that were used in the Thunderbird 1955 yearbook. The proofs were also made available to the AF ROTC cadets to order photographs as indicated on the order page near the back of the album. Also, some snapshots and more formal photographs of peole in the Columbia Air Force ROTC.

Chandler Chemical Museum Records, 1934-1980

This collection consists of copies of the card catalogue and two inventories of the holdings of the Chandler Chemical Museum. One inventory is a handwritten list, by case and by shelf, created by curator Samuel A. Tucker in the 1930s. The other inventory, from 1980, consists of color photographs from each numbered shelf with a list identifying the items.

Charity Clarke Moore and Clement Clarke Moore papers, 1767-1863

Letters written by Charity Clarke Moore and one letter and a diary written by her son Clement Clarke Moore. Charity Moore's letters range in date from 1767 to 1834 and were written to her sister, Lady Mary Clarke Vassal Affleck and other members of her family and friends. They are personal in nature dealing with family affairs and day to day events. Of the same character is Clement Moore's letter which was written to his cousin, Lady Mary Elizabeth Fox Powys Lilford in November 1840. The diary contains brief entries from 20 November 1856 to 8 July 1863, two days before his death. It is mainly a record of the weather, the temperature, and his benefactions. The letters are all mounted on the blank leaves of one volume and the diary occupies a second volume. Also included are nine volumes from the library of Benjamin Moore.

This collection consists of 14 images in color and in black and white of three charter documents of King's College, now known as Columbia University in the City of New York. It includes the October 31, 1754 charter for King's College; the May 13, 1755 conveyance of land; and the March 14, 1770 confirmation of the grant of land. The parchment documents were photographed by Dwight Primiano in September 2003. The collection includes negatives, prints, slides and color transparencies.

This collection contains color slides and negatives, black & white negatives, sound recordings, moving pictures, and papers used for the Columbia College Class of 1943 45-year reunion in 1988. Materials were presented in an audio visual slide presentation at the Faculty House. It includes newspaper headlines, photographs of people and campus scenes, and original images of people and subjects. The collection also contains negatives, one 0.25" reel, one 45-minute audio-cassette, and one compact VHS cassette of magnetic tape.

Additionally, there is one album with portraits of Trustees, one from the School of Mines Summer School of Practical Engineering, and one documenting the performance of Capt. Kidd.

This collection contains the Alumni News magazine's name files (A-Z). These "morgue" files contain newspaper clipplings, articles, press releases, book reviews, offprints, class reunion questionnaires, birth, marriage and death notices, change of address forms, some photographs and correspondence with the magazine, including submissions for the Class Notes section. The Alumni Federation included all Columbia schools: Columbia College but also Law, Physician and Surgeons, Journalism, Architecture, Pharmacy, etc. Files are organized alphabetically by the alum's last name and date from around 1919 to 1955.

The surviving files of official correspondence, reports, documents, and printed materials of King's College from 1750 to 1784 and Columbia College from 1785 to 1890, as well as Columbia University up to 1964. The King's College era materials include grants, deeds, indentures, lists of governors, leases, accounts, etc. The Columbia College era papers commence with documentation regarding the attempts to revive the college at the end of the American Revolution. In the later period these papers primarily supplement and document the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees. Much material was destroyed and scattered in the late 19th century leaving this collection quite incomplete.
