Charles Malamuth Papers, 1910-1965

Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files, and printed materials. Malamuth translated such works as Trotsky's "Stalin" and Valentin Kataev's "Kvadratura kruga." After World War II, he worked successively for the American Joint Distribution Committee in Europe and the Middle East, the Voice of America, and Radio Liberty. These papers reflect many aspects of Malamuth's career. Among the correspondents are Max Eastman, Eugene Lyons, Adolphe Menjou, and Lev Trotsky. There are one or two items each from Ili︠́a︡ Erenburg, Evengiĭ Kataev, Anatoliĭ Lunacharskiĭ, Alekseĭ Tolstoĭ, and Evgeniĭ Zami︠a︡tin. Manuscripts include a signed typescript of Boris Pilńi︠a︡k's "Volga vpadaet v Kaspiĭskoe more," a film scenario by Viktor Shklovskiĭ, and plays by I︠U︡riĭ Olesha, Tolstoĭ, and Zami︠a︡tin. There are photographs of David Ben-Gurion, Bela Kun, Lev Kamenev, Vladimir Lenin, and Grigoriĭ Zinovév. There are also photographs from Soviet Russia ca. 1920, and some about the resettlement of the Adenese Jews to Israel. Subject files deal with the publication of Trotsky's "Stalin," the American Joint Distribution Committee, the Voice of America, and Radio Liberty.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, and printed materials relating to the history of the Leĭb Gvardiĭ Pervyĭ Strelkovoĭ Polk (First Rifle Regiment of the Imperial Guard) and its emigre veterans' group, Obe̋dinenie Ofit︠s︡erov Pervogo Strelkovogo Polka (Union of Officers of the First Rifle Regiment of the Imperial Guard). Correspondence includes letters from members of the Union, and letters to the union on the occasion of the Regiment's 75th and 100th jubilees (1931, 1956). Among the manuscripts are autobiographies and memoirs of members of the Union, touching on such topics as the history of the Regiment and its service in World War I. There are a few items from the period of World I and the Civil War, but almost the entire collection dates from the 1920s to the 1950s.

The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts by Marchenko and others, documents, photographs, printed materials, notebooks, notes, and subject files. Correspondence consists of Marchenko's personal correspondence and the correspondence of the Kronstadt Group, an anti-communist emigre organization. Manuscripts consist mostly of articles by Marchenko on the economy of the Soviet Union, many of them published. Printed materials include mimeographed materials, pamphlets, clippings, maps, and copies of several anti-Communist periodicals. Marchenko's notes and notebooks cover topics on economics, the Soviet Union and the Russian language. Subject files include information on the Institute for the Study of the U.S.S.R. (Munich) and the Kronstadt Group.
