The diary is a detailed account of Abbott's trip from Sydney, Australia to the Philippines, Hong Kong, Macao, China and Japan. There are numerous pen-and-ink sketches of landscape, architecture, historical sites, and inhabitants, and maps, some in water color. Pasted in the volume are memorabilia such as menus, hotel brochures, postcards, photographs, clippings, calling cards, etc. Of special interest are his accounts of the various native Christian communities he visited. Following the text there is a name index. In addition to the volume there are some related letters, documents, memorabilia and published maps.

This collection contains the manuscript originally entitled "Biblical Researches in Palestine and the Countries in the South," appendices of English-Arabic lists and language exercises, travel itineraries, a guide to Arabic pronunciation, and supplementary materials relating to travel; galley proofs of the Friedrich Wilhelm Gesenius lexicon with handwritten annotations by Robinson and possibly others; as well as two plastic-bound transcripts, indexed, of letters exchanged between Edward Robinson and Moses Stuart between 1826 and 1830.

Henry Preserved Smith (1847-1927) was a Presbyterian minister in Ohio and New York and a scholar with specializations in Hebrew and Cognate Languages, historical and critical interpretations of the Bible who was tried for heresy by the Presbyterian Church, 1892-1894, and was subsequently Professor of Church history and Davenport Professor of Hebrew and Cognate Languages at Union Theological Seminary, 1917-1925. The collection contains scrapbooks as they were assembled by Smith to document his heresy trial, as well as the contemporaneous trial of Charles Augustus Briggs, and three scrapbooks on Hebrew literature, as well as other writings and notes including nine of Smith's notebooks, correspondence, speeches, trial materials, lecture notes, and other materials maintained by Smith during his work as a professor and librarian.
