Correspondence, manuscripts, memorabilia, photographs, phonograph and tape recordings, and printed files. Included are Cerf's personal correspondence files, 1929-1945, and the diaries and scrapbooks which he maintained from his school days throughout his active career. The diaries, in date-book format, contain terse notes on Cerf's meetings with authors and friends, on his travels and publishing activities; the scrapbooks contain correspondence and photographs, as well as memorabilia and printed items, and were annotated by Cerf and his wife, Phyllis Fraser Cerf Wagner. Correspondence, manuscripts, and books of Kielty. Of special interest are the long and rich files of letters from Dorothy Canfield Fisher and W. Somerset Maugham, as well as letters from other contemporary authors, among them, Bernard Berenson, Isak Dinesen, Rumer Godden, Franz Werfel, and Kathleen Winsor.

The collection consists of his working notebooks in 31 volumes, manuscripts and printed versions of speeches, articles, and reports, many relating to the Institute of Pacific Relations and the Far East. Also, a group of materials, 1957-1965, relating to Lasker's study of Prophetics, the conditions (psychological and physical), methods, history, and case studies of prediction. It comprises some 5,000 pages (in 33 binders) of abstracts and comments; an index to abstracts by names, topics, and sub-topics; notes for a substantial bibliography; printed and manuscript materials, and the typed draft of an unpublished book"Dates With Destiny" 1964.

The letters are written to various people and are partly social and partly business in nature. In some Warner gives advice about publishing matters; in others there are discussions of Warner's extensive public speaking engagements.

Letters of Hoffman to his family. There are seventeen letters to his niece, Matilda Nicholas Whitman, and one letter to his half-sister, Ann Hoffman Nicholas. The correspondence deals with the literary and social life in New York and with the Hoffman family. Two of the letters have notes added by his father, Josiah Ogden Hoffman. Also, an engraved portrait of Charles Fenno Hoffman.

Collection consists of ca.1,708 items, and some family correspondence and mementoes. The most valuable part appears to be his notes refuting various libel charges brought against him. This collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.

The collection is divided into two parts: the Frederic Dannay papers and the files of ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE (EQMM). The Dannay papers consist of extensive correspondence with most of the notable mystery writers of this century, as well as well-known authors who sometimes wrote in that genre: Isaac Asimov; Lawrence Block; Ray Bradbury; Pearl S Buck; Edgar Rice Burroughs; James M. Cain; Raymond Chandler; Agatha Christie, etc. Most of the novels and short stories written by Dannay and Lee are represented in manuscript form: "The Roman Hat Mystery;" "Ten Day's Wonder;" "Cat of Many Tails;" "The Scarlet Letters;" "The Glass Village;" "The Player on the Other Side;" "And on the Eighth Day" etc. In addition, there are the manuscripts of books edited by Ellery Queen; manuscripts by Ellery Queen Jr.; scripts by Ellery Queen; poetry by Dannay; contracts between Dannay and Lee, as well as between them both as Ellery Queen and numerous parties. There is one poem by Louis Zukofsky and another poem by Charles Olson included in letters. There is also a transcription of a letter from Charles Olson to Michael Shayer.

Many of the letters relate to Robert Burns and to the Burns country of Ayrshire. Among the early items are letters from Robert Burns, Samuel Johnson, Hester Thrale Piozzi, Edgar Allan Poe, and Abraham Lincoln.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, notebooks, documents, photographs, course-related materials, and printed materials. The manuscripts include typescripts of Sykes' published and unpublished novels, monographs, plays, short stories, and articles. Among these are The Perennial Avant Garde, The Cool Millennium, and The Hidden Remnant. Sykes' notes and notebooks span the period from the early 1930s to 1980, and include preliminary ideas and sketches for his books, as well as autobiographical material. A small number of documents concern Sykes' wartime work in the U.S. Government Office of War Information. Course-related material including writings and correspondence of students taught by Sykes between 1962 and 1975 at the New School and as an adjunct professor at Columbia University. Printed materials consist of numerous reviews of Sykes' books, in addition to offprints and articles by Sykes. Included as well are printed materials about or connected with Sykes, offprints of articles inscribed to him, and many volumes from his library. The substantial correspondence series includes personal letters and correspondence with agents and publishers relating to his books. Correspondents include Harold Clurman, Aaron Copland, Lawrence Durrell, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Francis Steegmuller, as well as a number of Sykes' students. There is extensive correspondence between Sykes and the artist John Hartell from 1927 to 1983.

The files are particularly strong for authors included in two important historical series"The New American Nation" Richard B. Morris and Henry S. Commager, editors; and "The Rise of Modern Europe" William L. Langer, editor. The files of Cass Canfield Sr. contain substantial material on Planned Parenthood and International Planned Parenthood.

Correspondence includes both personal and business letters, dealing with wildlife conservation, civic interests, and birding. There is some correspondence of George A. Hough, Sr., father of H.B. Hough, who was editor of the New Bedford MA Standard. Most of the correspondence is arranged alphabetically, by personal name or subject, out-going and in-coming filed together. Henry and Elizabeth Hough's correspondence, for which there are no in-coming or related letters, are filed chronologically. Cataloged correspondents include Calvin Coolidge, Max Eastman, Helen Keller, John F. Kennedy, Emily Post, and James Reston.

The correspondence consists of two series, general correspondence and correspondence relating to "Criminal Justice History." There are manuscripts by Cohen for "Interpretive History of American Political Economy" (unpublished?) and other manuscripts including the introduction to the film script "Public Enemy." There are manuscripts by other authors submitted for publication in "Criminal Justice History" with related photographs. The subject files relate to "Business and Politics in America" with related photographs, the Spater artistic censorship case at the University of California, discussion material relating to the "National Right to Work Legislation" "Brutal Justice" with related slides, the Geese National Theater Company, the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the paper "Vicisitudes of an Absentee Landlord." The printed materials include copies of CJH articles, issues of "Historical Approaches to Studying Crime" and other offprints

Letters of Rhoades written to William Kimberly Palmer and covering a broad range of subjects including the Civil War, Lincoln, the theater, New England authors, and travels in the Orient and the Arctic.

Papers dealing with Robinson's activities as a student and instructor in English at Columbia University, editor of CONTEMPORARY VERSE, senior editor at THE READER'S DIGEST, poet and author of many books including THE CARDINAL. Among the correspondents are Melville Cane, Paul de Kruif, John Erskine, Merrill Moore, and Christopher Morley.

The papers also deal with his work with the Philippine National Bank, the Irish Banking Commission, the Banking Inquiry of 1925 and the Banking Act of 1933, the New Zealand Monetary Commission, Australian Banking, and the Indian Currency Commission. Among the major correspondents are Charles Francis Adams, Irving Fisher, Carter Glass, Francis W. Hirst, William G. McAdoo, Christopher Morley, Manuel L. Quezon, and E.R.A. Seligman.

With the exception of letters to John Dewey, George Rives, G. Stanley Hall and some original incoming correspondence, the papers of James McKeen Cattell consist of typescript copies of correspondence with Seth Low, Nicholas Murray Butler, and faculty members, dealing with Psychology Dept. matters, professional matters, and Cattell's battle for academic freedom which ended in his dismissal from and subsequent suit against Columbia. Included are typescript copies of University reports, printed court records, and transcripts of correspondence with Cattell's lawyers.

The material is divided into four sections, cataloged material; general correspondence; specific files with authors who were clients of the agency; and correspondence with other literary agents and editors, appointment books, and financial papers.

There are two typewritten manuscripts of John Dewey: "The Naturalistic Theory of Perception by the Senses" and "Valuation Judgments and Immediate Quality" both of which contain the author's holograph corrections and emendations. Also, two manuscripts of Ernst Cassirer: "Kant and Rousseau" and "Ficino's Place in Intellectual History."

Correspondence with André Gide, the manuscripts and notes for his biography PORTRAIT OF ANDRÉ GIDE, and for his translations of the JOURNALS OF ANDRÉ GIDE, SO BE IT, and PRETEXTS, and other notes and articles about André Gide. Also, correspondence with many contemporary French writers including Albert Camus, Jean Cocteau, Julian Green, Valéry Larbaud, Jean Malaquais, Roger Martin du Gard, André Maurois, Henry de Montherlant, and Georges Simenon. Prof. O'Brien translated works by Baidouy, Albert Camus, Jean Cocteau, Henry de Montherlant, Nathalie Sarraute, and Jean-Paul Sartre; the typescript of Camus' L'EXILE ET LE ROYAUME is of special interest. Professor O'Brien's files cover a broad range of French culture including correspondence with other French scholars, educational organizations, editors, publishers (notably Blanche W. Knopf), with members of the OSS in wartime France, and with other literary figures such as Gilbert Highet, Dwight Macdonald, and Klaus Mann.

Correspondence, both personal and relating to social and political movements of 1926-1953, unpublished manuscripts on economic and political subjects, an unfinished manuscript on Fanny Wright with notes for the completion of the book, a manuscript outline for a projected book - "Towards Understanding America.", the manuscript of an F.B.I. investigation of the early years of Communism in America. Also included are pamphlets, magazine articles, and books, 1914-1919 by Louis C. Fraina and 1926-1953 by Lewis Corey.

Typescript copies of Louise R Loomis' translations of contemporary accounts of the Council of Constance, 1414-1418 (THE COUNCIL OF CONSTANCE; THE UNIFICATION OF THE CHURCH. Translated by Louise Ropes Loomis. Edited and Annotated by John Hine Mundy and Kenneth M. Woody. New York: Columbia University Press, 1961). These are not the accounts which constitute the text of the printed volume, but rather translations of other contemporary works made for her research, sometimes cited in the published "notes."

Collection contains typed manuscripts of Louis DeFoe's DAYBOOK OF A CRITIC and THE THEATRE THROUGH A CRITIC'S EYES. Included is a scrapbook of Mr. DeFoe's columns for the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Also included are 56 scrapbooks of theatre clippings.

Howe, Robinson Jeffers, Archibald MacLeish, Louis MacNeice, Edgar Lee Masters, Lewis Mumford, Hyam Plutzik, Allen Tate, and Louis Zukovsky. Also, extensive correspondence with Robert Lax and Thomas Merton, as well as manuscripts by these two authors.

Letters both from and about Irish poets, playwrights, and editors written to Mary Louisa Sutliff. The correspondents discuss Irish literature and Irish writers and show a warm friendship for Miss Sutliff. Among the authors represented are Seumas O'Sullivan, Padraic Colum, and George W. Russell. Also, a box of printed materials about Irish authors.
