John Leonard (1939 -2008) was an American literary and cultural critic best known for his extensive writing on literature, television, media, politics and American culture and his work as head editor of The New York Times Book Review in the 1970s. The John Leonard papers include drafts of Leonard's reviews, essays, essay collections, and works of fiction and nonfiction. The collection also includes his correspondence with prominent literary and cultural figures, his research and business files, personal memorabilia, photographs, signed artwork, printed matter, posthumous tributes to Leonard, and audio-visual material.

In addition to personal correspondence and documents, there are files of Amnesty International, the human rights organization of which Morris was American Section chairman. Also included are notes and manuscripts of Morris' studies in Japanese literature and culture, particularly relating to his many books and translations. His interest in puzzles, and compilations of several volumes of them, are reflected in notes and correspondence. Among the major correspondence are Donald Keene, Anthony Powell, Sacheverell Sitwell and Arthur Waley

Correspondence, manuscripts, and newspaper clippings of Nikolaĭ P. Vakar. The correspondence includes numerous letters by Aleksandr Konovalov and Anatoliĭ Velʹmin and one letter by Grand Duke Dimitriĭ Pavlovich. Among manuscripts are a short autobiography by Vakar, and the originals and copies of his diary from 1938-1940. The diary concerns such topics as emigre politics in Paris in this period. There are numerous clippings of newspaper pieces by Vakar. In addition, there is a long obituary of Vakar by Paul Friedrich.

Cataloged correspondents are Georgiĭ Adamovich, George Kennan, Vasiliĭ Maklakov, I︠U︡liĭ Margolin, Sofii︠a︡ Pregeĺ Harrison Salisbury, I︠U︡riĭ Terapi︠a︡no, Nikolaĭ Uli︠́a︡nov, and Edmund Wilson. There are manuscripts of several stories by Olǵa, and of her biography of Vladimir; also included are the memoirs of N.N. Savvin about the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute. Printed materials include articles about Vladimir and his obituaries. There is a photograph of the "Normandie" coming into an American port in the 1930s.
