Material gathered by Oswald Garrison Villard in the researches for his biography JOHN BROWN, 1800-1859: A BIOGRAPHY FIFTY YEARS AFTER. A large part of the materials is copies of correspondence both contemporary and of a later period, concerning John Brown and his associates, especially in the Kansas Territory and at the Harper's Ferry raid. Of the original letters in the collection, many are from descendants and family of John Brown and the men who accompanied him on his raid. There are clippings, pamphlets, proof sheets, and other printed matter. Photographs number 181 items.

The collection consists of the editorial and production archives of Vanguard Press: correspondence, manuscripts, contracts, memoranda, galley proofs, photographs, clippings, and printed materials. The correspondence and editorial files contain a wealth of detailed information about individual authors and the growth and development of the Press. Correspondence and manuscripts of Van Doren, consisting of letters, poems, short stories, novels, plays, radio broadcast transcripts ("Invitation to Learning"), diaries, critical works, proofs, and printed works. Correspondents include Louise Bogan, Philip Booth, Babette Deutsch, Richard Eberhart, T.S. Eliot, John Gould Fletcher, Herbert Gorman, E.W. Howe, Robinson Jeffers, Archibald MacLeish, Louis MacNeice, Edgar Lee Masters, Lewis Mumford, Hyam Plutzik, Allen Tate, and Louis Zukovsky. Also, extensive correspondence with Robert Lax and Thomas Merton, as well as manuscripts by these two authors.

The collection documents the scholarship and writing of John Eugene Unterecker, a poet, biographer of the poet Hart Crane, and professor of English. The majority of the collection is composed of correspondence and manuscripts. Materials date from 1961 to 1987.

Letters to Gael Turnbull from Charles Olson, William Carlos Williams and his wife Florence Williams, Louis Zukofsky and his wife Celia Zukofsky. There is one poem by Louis Zukofsky and another poem by Charles Olson included in letters. There is also a transcription of a letter from Charles Olson to Michael Shayer.

This collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.

Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials of Sypher, reflecting his interest in A.C. Swinburne and in the Estonian poet, Aleksis Rannit. Correspondents include Joseph Hume, Ted Joans, Aleksis Rannit, Enid Starkie, and Algernon Charles Swinburne. There are additional materials on Africa, the Mina dialect in Togo, and the Sypher and related families of New York State.

Three groups of drawings, two in notebooks and the third torn from a notebook. 1). A 38 page spiral bound notebook containing 29 drawings, 9 pages of notes, and a concrete poem by Nancy Holt. Most of the drawings were done in preparation for his show at L'Attico Gallery in Rome, October 15 to November 7, 1969. The last two drawings refer to his travels in the Yucatan. 2). Three loose drawings torn from a larger spiral bound notebook. They are studies for L'Attico Gallery Exhibition. 3). A 12 page typewriter paper tablet containing 10 drawings (four are loose) and two pages of notes. The drawings were done from late 1969 through 1970 in Vancouver, the Anaconda Mines in British Columbia, and elsewhere.
