The collection consists of letters from celebrities in various fields, largely addressed to Harry Harkness Flagler. Included are letters of Ambrose Bierce, Thomas A. Edison, Edwin Forrest, Andrew Jackson, Rudyard Kipling, Richard Mansfield, John D. Rockefeller, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Ruskin, Constantin Stanislavsky, and George Washington. Especially noteworthy are five letters of Charles Dickens, bound together in one volume.

Matthews' assignments spanned the world. As a journalist he covered the Italian invasion of Abyssinia in 1935 and 1936, Spain and the Spanish Civil War, Italy, India, Europe and World War II, postwar Europe, Latin America; as an editor he wrote about Vietnam, China, and Latin America.

Major correspondents include William Averell Harriman, Hubert Horatio Humphrey, LeRoi Jones, Edward I. Koch, John V. Lindsay, Robert Moses, and Edmund S. Muskie.

Jacob J. Podell collection of Franklin Delano Roosevelt papers, 1896-1943

A collection of Franklin Roosevelt letters, manuscripts, and documents including twelve letters written to his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, of a personal nature, and 24 letters written to a business associate, John B. Shearer. Signed typescript and mimeographed copies of the first three inaugural addresses are present in the collection as well as a valuable document"Biographical Notes for the Cyclopedia of American Biography" completed in the President's holograph on August 21, 1919. The most charming letter is the one written to his grandfather, Warren Delano, on August 23, 1896, when the President was fourteen years old and traveling through Germany. The books in the collection reflect a wide range of interests including religion, poetry, and history, and all are either signed or inscribed, including the seventeen copies of the President's own writings.

Miscellaneous papers of Hoffman. With the exception of a dozen miscellaneous letters and docuemnts of a routine nature, the collection consists of four scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from a variety of New York City and State newspapers and some memorabilia relating to Hoffman's political life. One facsimile of a Hoffman letter and an autographed visiting card of Horatio C. King have been cataloged.

John VanSchaick Lansing Pruyn letters, 1838-1869

Letters between Pruyn and various individuals who were involved in an important case brought before the Supreme Court in 1864 to determine the rights of organizations to bridge navigable streams. Pruyn argued the case successfully for the Hudson River Bridge Company, for which he was counsel. The collection depicts Pruyn's activities on behalf of the company and includes his correspondence pertaining to the case with William Henry Seward, James Moore Wayne, and S.L. Fairchild.
