The collection consists of materials used by Frederick Fried in his research and writing about folk art and material culture, especially related to Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. A significant portion of the collection consists of the personal archive of William F. Mangels, which was purchased by Fried in 1955. Mangels was a designer and manufacturer of amusement rides and founder of the American Museum of Public Recreation at Coney Island. Subjects include amusement parks, amusement rides, architecture, bathing pavilions, beaches, beauty contests, carousels, carousel animals, Brooklyn, coin-operated machines, Coney Island, exhibitions, games of chance and skill, hotels, mechanical rides, mechanization, parades, pleasure railways, recreation, roller coasters, sideshows, transportation, and other subjects related to American material culture and popular amusement.

These files have been compiled by the Rare Book and Manuscript Library from its origin in 1930 through the present day. The material derives largely from gifts, and the occasional purchase; much of the subject file in particular is made of ephemera included in the American Type Founders, Co. Library, purchased in 1942. Prospectuses and information sent by fine presses and book artists are added to the relevant files in an ongoing fashion. The files cover subjects from the beginning of printing to the current day.

Papers consist of correspondence, a manuscript, photographs, and printed materials. There is family correspondence and letters from members of the Orthodox hierarchy in fhe Soviet Baltic countries. A handwritten memoir entitled "Moe rannee detstvo" (7p.) discusses Illiasevich's childhood. In a photograph album and a folder of loose photographs there are family pictures, pictures of the village of Ianovo in Kovno (Kaunas) province, and pictures of members of the Orthodox hierarchy in Soviet Lithuania. Newspapers and clipping contain publications about E. Kalisskii and his sons Pavel and Dmitrii.

Printed ephemera, including some periodicals. Most items concern various radical groups, such as the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDRP), the Party of Socialist-Revolutionaries (PSR), and to a lesser extent the Jewish socialist Bund, the Polish Socialist Party, and the Anarchist-Communists. Most of the materials were printed in western Europe in the period 1906-1914; later materials chiefly concern Russia in 1917-1920. While most are in Russian, there are also items in Polish, Yiddish, German, and French.

This collection of approx. 7 linear feet of papers documents the output of the independent printing press established at Taliesin in the 1930s. The collection consists of brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, Taliesin magazines, festival programs, invitations, and miscellaneous ephemera such as Christmas cards and stationery. The collection also includes every issue of the Taliesin Square Papers series dating from 1941 to 1953. All of the printed material in the collection features the distinctive graphic design associated with Frank Lloyd Wright. Much of the graphic design work can be attributed to Eugene Masselink (1910-1962).
