This collection consists of photographs, contact sheets, slides as well as some reproduced illustrations. The collection contains both original prints and reproductions of prints from the Office of Public Information/Office of Public Affairs. Photographs depict student life, university events, campus buildings, alumni, faculty, administrators, as well as honorary degree recipients and famous visitors to campus. Photos of faculty and alumni include individual portraits as well as documentation of classroom, workplace interaction, and individuals at alumni events.
Series I: Gabe Cooney Photographs, 1980s, 1996-1997
Arranged in five sub-series, this series contains 8x 10 photographs and oversize contact sheets taken by photographer Gabriel Cooney who was hired by the Office of Alumni and Development to take photos of students, administrators and campus for use in an admissions brochure in the 1980s and fundraising campaign brochures in the 1990s. The contact sheets found in this series correspond directly to sheets of negatives found in the Gabe Cooney Photograph Collection (UA#0220).
Series II: Columbia Magazine Photo Files, 1978-2006
This series contains photographs collected and published by the staff of Columbia magazine between 1978 and 2006. Many of the photographs are reproductions of photos, paintings and prints of alumni, honorary degree recipients, and noted university administrators and donors courtesy of the Office of Public Information/Office of Public Affairs and dating prior to 1978.
The processed portion of the collection is arranged into two series.

The Office of Alumni and Development (formerly known as University Development and Alumni Relations or UDAR) upholds the mission of Columbia University by maximizing useful philanthropic gift and grant support in ways that bring benefit to the University, satisfaction to its donors, and fulfillment to its faculty, students and staff. All individual school and constituent alumni offices report to this office, which itself reports to the University's central administration. The Office of Alumni Relations and Development is responsible for the running of the Columbia Alumni Association, the Columbia Campaign, and publishing Columbia, the University's quarterly magazine for alumni, which was founded in 1975. The magazine is sent free of charge to all alumni of Columbia University in the U.S. and abroad, as well as to faculty, staff, and friends. In 2009 UDAR rebranded itself as the Office of Alumni and Development when it moved into the newly built Columbia Alumni Center on 113th Street.
