Series I: Angus MacLise, 1959-2010

Series I: Angus MacLise includes writing, artwork, photography, correspondence, and audio-visual material produced by (or of) MacLise during his lifetime and relating to his activities as an artist, musician, poet, and editor or publisher in New York, San Francisco, and Nepal, as well as several other locations, before his death in 1979. The series also includes a number of posthumous materials that attend to, and have sought to shape, his legacy.

Subseries I.1: Writings, 1959-1979

This subseries contains poetry, notes, prose pieces, scripts, lists, theatrical pieces, stage designs, text fragments, and other textual and manuscript material created by Angus MacLise. Many of these manuscript items include illustrations or other artwork in addition to text. Large numbers of the items in this subseries are in fragmentary form or represent notes and ideas that were never developed into published poems, performances, or documents, but drafts and revisions of better-known published works, including Year, a shamanic reordering of the calendar year published by MacLise and Piero Heliczer's Dead Language Press, are also included. While most of the items are originals (both holographic and typescript), some photocopies are also included in the subseries; these are clearly noted. Researchers interested in other writing by MacLise not found here should consult Subseries I.5 (Publishing, Editorial and Business Ventures) and Subseries I.7 (Posthumous Materials and Legacy).

Subseries I.5: Publishing, Editorial, and Business Ventures, 1960s - 1979

This subseries includes materials related to Angus MacLise's activities as a publisher and editor, across a range of different projects and imprints that he originated and worked on. The bulk of the subseries comprises publications, prints, and other material released by Bardo Matrix, which was founded by Jon Chick, Dana Young and others as a psychedelic light show in Boulder, Colorado in the late 1960s. Chick and Young followed the hippie trail to Kathmandu in 1969, where Chick established the Spirit Catcher bookstore on the notorious Freak Street, which became a hub for Western expatriates and artists. Following their own arrivals in Nepal, MacLise and Ira Cohen worked with Chick to expand Bardo Matrix into a dynamic imprint for publishing their own writing as well as that of their friends and colleagues. This resulted in a series of pamphlets, prints, books, and broadsides, printed in limited editions on local handmade craft paper, including the Starstreams series under which book-length works by MacLise, Cohen, Diane di Prima, Paul Bowles, Charles Henri Ford, Gregory Corso, and others all appeared between 1974 and 1979. (Cohen's term for their copious activities undertaken during this period, including their close collaborations with local craftsmen, was "the great rice paper adventure.") While many items in this are final, published items, there are also proofs, galleys, and alternate editions represented in the subseries, along with documentation of the day-to-day operations of the press, the bookstore, and the scenes that formed around them. This subseries also notably includes a complete issue no. 9 of Phyllis Johnson's Aspen magazine, co-guest-edited by Angus and Hetty MacLise, and material related to Ting Pa, the literary periodical and Bardo Matrix offshoot that MacLise edited and published while living in Nepal. Finally, there are a number of documents and samples related to Himalayan Paper Inc., the handmade paper import-export company that MacLise was working on at the time of his death. The subseries also includes several hundred large-format prints and woodcuts related to said publications.

Subseries I.6: Audio-Visual Materials, 1963-2003

The audiovisual materials include copies of the commercially released CDs of MacLise's music released on the Quakebasket label in 1999 and 2000 and a copy of the flexidisc included in Aspen no. 9 featuring Angus and Hetty MacLise performing under the name Joyous Lake. The bulk of the subseries, however, is comprised of reel-to-reel tapes featuring recordings of MacLise and his associates. The tapes, compiled and created by Sheldon Rochlin in 1981 are copies of masters from several collections, including those of Don Snyder, Tony Conrad, and Rochlin, as indicated by the initials preceding a given tape's assigned number. (Numbers beginning "DS" originate in the collection of Don Snyder; "TC" originate in the collection of Tony Conrad; "SR" originate in the collection of Sheldon Rochlin.) These recordings are largely of musical and improvisatory ensembles, poetry readings, chanting, and other performances, as well as informal recordings of MacLise and others primarily in Nepal and New York. Hetty MacLise features on several recordings. While there are no recordings here attributed either to the Velvet Underground (or The Warlocks as they were originally named) or to LaMonte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music, many are coincident in both time and place with the genesis of those musical projects for which Angus MacLise is perhaps best known, and feature musicians also involved with them, including Tony Conrad and John Cale. [Digitized copies of unique material were delivered as part of the collection. Please email rbml@columbia.edu for more information.]

This includes correspondence––notably between Ira Cohen and Gerard Malanga, who also discuss MacLise's death, as well as several editors and programmers––concerning republishing, releasing or performing work by MacLise, special issues of journals that feature his writing or criticism thereof, press clippings, and items related to the staging of Boo-Hooray's exhibit "Dreamweapon: The Life and Art of Angus MacLise 1938-1979" (2010).
