Summary Information

Abstract

Daniel Talbot was the founder of New Yorker Films, an independent film distrubition company. The company was established in 1965 and operational until 2009. Talbot helped revolutionize the way art-house and avant garde cinema was consumed. This collection features his correspondence with producers and filmmakers, as well as press kits, production notes, original artwork and posters, financial and operational records, and bound guest books, which were a fixture at Talbot's New Yorker Theater in the 1960s. The collection ranges from the 1960s to the 2000s and consists of paper records as well as audiovisual and photographic materials.

Description

Scope and Content

The collection is composed of correspondence files that span more than 30 years, and contain more than two decades of financial records, producer reports, and contract files related to New Yorker Films. The collection also consists of dozens of theatrical guest books dating from 1960, which were located at New Yorker Theater for guest feedback. The collection is an outstanding record of independent film exhibition and distribution.

History / Biographical Note

Biographical Note

Dan Talbot is an important figure in art-house cinema in the United States and founder of New Yorker Films. New Yorker Films began in 1965 and operated until 2009. The company was a means to exhibit foreign films at the now defunct New Yorker Theater. Talbot first acquired Bernardo Bertolucci's Before the Revolution, which led the way for New Yorker Films to acquire more than 400 film titles. New Yorker Films held the rights for theatrical release to theaters and colleges, as well as to distribute films in DVD format. In 1981, Talbot opened Lincoln Plaza Cinemas at Broadway and 63rd St. in New York City. Talbot was honored by IFP/New York with the Gotham Award for Industry Lifetime Achievement in 2004. Through his exhibition an distribution activities, Talbot provided movie goers in the United States with access to a vast array of international filmmakers, including Robert Bresson, Claude Chabrol, Rainer Fassbinder, Federico Fellini, Werner Herzog, Yasujiro Ozu, Ousmane Sembene, and Wim Wenders, among others.
