Description

Scope and Content

Office files and materials that he took with him after he retired (in the 1970s). Most of these are business-related documents, including some correspondence, memoranda, business reports (many ditto or the like and not published formally, but some published) with some drafts/printed copies of speeches or articles he delivered/wrote (about business, banking, and personnel topics), some clippings and news articles, and some related background material. His research material connected with a thesis he wrote for Rutgers' Stonier School of Banking on benefit and pension programs at NYS thrift institutions in 1954 is inclused The thesis was subsequently published as a book by a small business press. Included in the files are some photos, including some of the WTC site and area, and some of other East River Savings Bank offices throughout NYC (dating the late 60s and early 70s); surveys for new branches, related negotiations, and construction oversight of them was the work he did at the end of his banking career, and then as a consultant for a while after that. There two versions of the same formal photo of the Rockefeller Committee group, before and after the photo was retouched to remove drinking glasses and smoking materials, at Rockefeller's request.

History / Biographical Note

Biographical Note

William L. Barton (1909-1999) was a graduate of Columba's School of General Studies (BS, 1934), a NYC bank executive of a NYC thrift institution (East River Savings Bank, now Century 21), and an officer of some state and national banking associations (AIB of ABA and NAMSB). Prior to becoming a banker, Barton worked in government administration and served as a ieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II. Barton was active in some NYC and NYS civic associations. He also served a couple of terms on Governor Nelson Rockefeller's NY State Management Advisory Committee.
