Description

Summary

Correspondence, course materials, student records, publications, and related printed materials of the Library School of the New York Public Library, 1900-1927. This collection consists chiefly of course related materials such as reading lists, syllabi, examinations, practice work, lecture notes, and related printed materials. The student records include application and placement files, grades, and correspondence with alumni. There are four boxes of correspondence and lecture notes of Mary Wright Plummer, Principal of the School, 1911-1916. Her files include correspondence and lecture notes dating back to her position as Director of the Pratt Institute Library School, 1896-1911. Also, a box of lecture notes of Mary Louisa Sutliff who taught at the School from 1911 to 1926.

History

A library school was opened at the New York Public Library in October, 1911. Its primary purpose was to provide trained assistants for the Library. Mary W. Plummer, founder and director of the Pratt Insitute Library School, was appointed principal. The school closed in 1926 due to a lack of financial support.
