Description

Summary

Correspondence, manuscripts, and books of Melville H. Cane. Among the correspondents are Van Wyck Brooks, Carl Jung, Lewis Mumford, William Saroyan, Upton Sinclair, Felix Frankfurter, Jessamyn West, and W.H.Auden. Included is a scrapbook of newspaper articles by Cane, written chiefly for the "New York Evening Post". He served as the Columbia University correspondent during 1901 and 1902, when he was studying for his degree at the School of Law

Biographical / Historical

American poet & lawyer. whose career included important achievements in the fields of copyright law, book publishing, and the writing and publishing of poetry.

Melville H. Cane, poet and lawyer made important achievements in the fields of copyright law book publishing and the writing and publishing of poetry. He recieved his A. B. 1900 and J. D. 1903 from Columbia University. As a lawyer his clients included Sinclair Lewis, Thomas Wolfe, Upton Sinclair, and William Saroyan. His accomplishments as a poet include winning the Poetry Society of America's Gold Medal for his contributions to American poetry. He also served on the Board of Directors of Harcourt Brace & World.
