Biographical / Historical

Nathaniel Clarke Locke was born on June 1, 1816, in Salem, New Jersey. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1838, and became a teacher in Loundesboro, Vermont, from 1838-1841. Locke then entered Union Theological Seminary and graduated in 1844. The following year, he was ordained a Presbyterian minister in Hanover, Maine, and served as a home missionary in Eastville, Virginia, from 1844 to 1846. His sermons indicate that between November of 1846 and October of 1847, Locke was the minister of Holmes Church in Northampton, Virginia, although biographical information on Locke provides no record of this. He seems to have left this church under ambiguous circumstances. He preached fire and brimstone and focused most often on the temptations of sin, the lusts of the passions, and the terrors of damnation. From Virginia, he went to Brooklyn and became pastor of Central Church in December, 1847. In 1850, he went to Hempstead, Long Island, and in 1852 he became the pastor of the Hempstead church until 1860. In 1858 he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity from the University of Alabama. He died in July of 1862 at the age of 46.
