Processing Information

Pastor's register was cataloged by Lynn A. Grove on 1988-07-15. The Williston papers were among a large group of unprocessed material that was organized in 2017 with the support of the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation; materials were rehoused in acid-free folders and archival document boxes. The finding aid was created by Rebecca Nieto in 2018 and edited by Leah Edelman in 2020.

Biographical / Historical

Martin Luther Williston was a Congregational minister. He was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on March 20, 1843, and attended Andover Theological Seminary in 1866 before enrolling in Union Theological Seminary. Williston graduated in 1869, and was ordained in the New York and Brooklyn congregational associations on March 3, 1880. Williston led pastorates in Flushing, New York from 1869-1872, in Galesburgh, Illinois from 1872-1876, in Jamestown, New York from 1876-1879, throughout Europe from 1879-1881, in Davenport, Iowa from 1882-1888, in Elmhurst, Illinois from 1888-1896, in Attleboro Falls, Massachusetts from 1897-1898, and in Barrington, Rhode Island in 1899. In addition to his pastoral work, Williston was a professor of History at Carleton College from 1881 to 1882. Williston died in Hartford, Connecticut on November 11, 1918.
