These are manuscripts and typescript documents of 34 different princely states that existed as distinct political entities in pre-independence India. Although the majority of these states were tiny principalities in western India (primarily in what is now Rajasthan), some (e.g., Hyderabad) were located in other regions of India and represented major powers in the region at that time.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, and newspapers. These include over four hundred letters to Alexander, as well as miscellaneous letters and telegrams; some of his manuscripts and notes; business records of his law firm; military documents of the western divisions of the Confederate Army; copybooks and letter books; and complete and partial newspapers and clippings from the various Southern newspapers (in particular THE SAVANNAH REPUBLICAN, the DAILY DISPATCH of Richmond, and the ADVERTISER AND REGISTER of Mobile) which carried Alexander's dispatches.

Papers of the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, committee files, membership records, financial records, fund raising records, motion pictures, audio tapes, phonograph records, photographs, posters, publications of ABMAC and other printed materials. Also included are the files of related Chinese relief organizations: Aid Refugee Chinese Intellectuals, 1954-1969; American Emergency Relief, 1941-1946; United Services to China, 1941-1977. Of particular interest are approximately 6,000 photographs of Chinese medical colleges, hospitals, laboratories and personnel and 45 phonograph records including speeches by such ABMAC supporters as Mme. Chiang Kai-Shek, Pearl S. Buck, Wendell Willkie, Fiorello LaGuardia and a number of movie stars

Professional and personal files including Armstrong's correspondence with professional associations, other engineers, and friends, his research notes, circuit diagrams, lectures, articles, legal papers, and other related materials. Of his many inventions and developments, the most important are: 1) the regenerative or feedback circuit, 1912, the first amplified radio reception, 2) the superheterodyne circuit, 1918, the basis of modern radio and radar, 3) superregeneration, 1922, a very simple, high-power receiver now used in emergency mobile service, and 4) frequency modulation - FM, 1933, static-free radio reception of high fidelity. More than half the files concern his many lawsuits, primarily with Radio Corporation of America, over infringement of the Armstrong patents. Litigation continued until 1967. Other files deal with his work in the Marcellus Hartley Research Laboratory at Columbia University, 1913-1935, and with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, his Air Force contracts for communications development, Army research during World War II, the Radio Club of America, the Institute of Radio Engineers, FM development at his radio station at Alpine, N.J., the use of FM in television, his involvement in Federal Communications Commission hearings and legislation, and his work with the Zenith Radio Corporation. This is a small collection of correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, teletype and mimeographed copies, clippings, and photostats, reflecting Berkman's reporting and intelligence work during the 1940s. There are radio dispatches from wartime Yugoslavia and from Greece in 1944, Office of Strategic Services (OSS) reports and analysis concerning Greece, Turkey, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East, and a pamphlet reflecting his later work with UNICEF.

Typescript by Alfred M. Bingham entitled "Soviet Experiments in Democracy: Report of a trip to the USSR in 1962." It concerns interviews he and his wife had with Soviet legal and educational personnel. In the report written following Bihgam's trip to the Soviet Union, he "attempted to evaluate those parts of the new Communist Party program which deal with democracy, in the light of conversations his wife and himself had with a number of Soviet citizens of professional standing in the fields of law, local government and education."

Manuscripts and related materials on the siege of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War, collected by Boris Ivanovich Bok. Included are diaries and memoirs by Russian participants in the siege: Dmitrii Grigor'evich Androsov (Diary), Oskar Fabianovich Berg (Memoirs), Vladimir Ferdinandovich Berg (Memoirs), Aleksandr Viktorovich Fok ("Zametki"), Nikolai Viktorovich Ienish (Memoirs), Aleksei Mikhailovich Iuzefovich (Memoirs), Vladimir Nikoalevich Nikitin (Diary), Aleksandr Apollonovich Vorob'ev (Memoirs). Some of the memoirs and diaries were published in: "Port-Arthur, Vospominaniia uchastnikov" (New York, 1955).
