The correspondence consists chiefly of Davis' typescript carbons of his letters to Columbia colleagues, other physicists, and other individuals at various manufacturers of equipment. The topics covered deal with Columbia students, faculty, course and research work, and his life long interest in the study of x-rays. The majority of these files cover the years 1914 to 1921 and 1932 to 1936. The cataloged letters include one each from Michael I. Pupin, Isidor I. Rabi, and Robert Simpson Woodward, one lengthy letter from Davis, and ten letters from Nicholas M. Butler. Also included are letters from Marie Clark Davis relating to the research of Lucy J. Hayner and Harold Webb for Webb's biography of Davis that appeared in the National Academy of Sciences' BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS (v. 34, 1960) along with extensive notes, bibliographies and manuscript and typescript versions of Webb's article. There are also manuscripts, typescripts, and notes by Davis relating to his research and writings, photographs of Davis and of his x-ray spectograph, and clippings and memorabilia of his life and work.

Included in her professional correspondence are numerous letters from George Sarton and Lynn Thorndike. College records, class materials and class notes document the development of her academic career beginning with her undergraduate career at Vassar. Numerous lecture notes, class notes and working papers reflect her teaching, research and lectures at New York University, Cornell, the Columbia University Renaissance Seminar, and her active participation in professional organizations such as the History of Science Society. Of particular interest are eight boxes of notes and related printed materials concerning astronomy, astronomers, and the history of science.

19.6 Linear FeetMiner's correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, manuscript and typescript notes, and printed materials relating to the history of Columbia University. Interfiled with Miner's papers are the correspondence, manuscripts, and notes of Columbia librarian Roger Howson (1882-1962) who had been writing a history of the University at the time of his retirement in 1948. Howson and Miner's correspondence is chiefly with Columbia University administrators, faculty, staff, and alumni and deals entirely with the history of the university. The two major Columbia correspondents are Provost Frank D. Fackenthal and Secretary Philip M. Hayden. There are manuscript and typescript drafts of chapters and parts of chapters by Howson and Miner, but neither's history was ever completed or published. These drafts along with the related correspondence, notes, and typescript copies of original manuscripts from Columbia's archives and manuscript collections are filed together under the appropriate headings in the Name and Subject Files. In addition there are two partially completed typescript drafts of each history.

Harry J. Carman papers, 1900-1964

His Columbia files include professional correspondence, lecture notes, course-related materia, and a bibliographical card index of American and European history. Dean Carman's abiding interest both in the academic and general communities is reflected in numerous special files which include correspondence to him as book review editor of HISTORICAL OUTLOOK, 1925-1929, as participant in Columbia's AMERICAN CULTURE SERIES, ca. 1935-1942, and STUDIES IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN AGRICULTURE, ca. 1935-1945. There are numerous files relating to his membership on the New York City Board of Higher Education, 1938-1964, the New York State Board of Mediation, 1941-1955, and the Japan American Committee on Intellectual Exchange. The many folders on American colleges attest to the Dean's concern for the quality and improvement of undergraduate education in the United States. Included are some of the working papers for PREPARATION FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION IN THE LIBERAL ARTS (published 1953), and THE RESURVEY OF PREPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION IN THE LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE (published 1961). Among the few and incomplete book manuscripts there is a typescript of LINCOLN AND PATRONAGE (published 1943) with handwritten addition and correction.

The papers are chiefly professional in nature, concerning teaching, research, students, and some Columbia University academic business, particularly the University Seminars, of which Gutmann was Director from 1970-1976. The files contain letters from colleagues at Columbia and elsewhere. Some of the major correspondents are: Arthur C. Danto, Irwin Edman, Charles Frankel, Horace L. Friess, Sterling P. Lamprecht, John H. Randall, and Herbert Schneider. There are special correspondence files devoted to Joseph Frank (1916-1970), Dean of the Colorado Rocky Mountain School, Fritz Marti, and numerous letters written to Gutmann in 1964 on his receiving the Nicholas Murray Butler Medal for Philosophy. There are also manuscripts by Gutmann on the myth of Prometheus, mystical experience, Nietzsche and the ethical movement. The subject files include material relating to academic freedom, awards, intergration, Gutmann's biography, Israel, and Gutmann's vitae. In addition there are printed materials by Gutmann and by others inscribed to Gutmann.

A set of published annual reports containing statistical information concerning enrollment and graduates from 1924 through 1976. There is also a collection of 62 bound volumes noting matriculation status and sometimes grade and course information for students enrolled in Columbia College, the Graduate Faculties, Summer Session, Faculty of Fine Arts (Department of Music and Architecture) from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Collection also includes matriculation receipt books from the early 1890s and some statistical information from Seth Low Junior College (1929-1936). Three volumes from 1785 to 1896 contain matriculation information for Columbia College students. Similar volumes documenting students enrolled in the School of Law and the College of Physicians and Surgeons were transferred to the Archives & Special Collections at the School of Law and the Medical School, respectively.

Ralph L. Rusk papers, 1913-1956
10 boxesCorrespondence, manuscripts, notes, course related materials, photographs, photostats, and printed materials of Rusk. Included are two small files of correspondence, approximately 100 items, relating to Rusk's editing of THE LETTERS OF RALPH WALDO EMERSON (1939) and to his study of occasional poetry in Colonial America for the Colonial Project in American Literature. The manuscripts include several miscellaneous items by Rusk, and five Columbia University masters essays submitted to him in connection with the Colonial American poetry study. Also, 12,000 note cards relating to this study as well as 150 photostatic copies of books of Colonial American poetry. For the Emerson edition there are 14,000 note cards on Emerson's life and letters. There are also 1,000 note cards for Rusk's edition of THE LETTERS OF EMMA LAZARUS (1939). The Columbia course related materials consist of notes, syllabi, reading lists, bibliographies, examination questions, lists of students and a few letters from them for Rusk's American literature course, 1931-1951. The printed materials are mainly reprints of articles on R.W. Emerson, inscribed to Rusk and containing annotations by him. In addition there are 23 photographs taken by Rusk in 1913, of a Passion Play which was performed in the Philippines.

There are several photographs of Williams during his college years and with other members of the Victorian Society. There are several drawings and both Williams' BLitt degree certification and his Distinguished Classmate Award.

The files span from the creation of the Department of Fine Arts through the mid-1990s and document the day to day maintenance of the School as well as the large scale vision held by faculty and administration. General administrative files such as financial records, meeting minutes, proposals, reports, and correspondence comprise the bulk of the collection. Correspondence from Dean Davidson Taylor and Associate Dean Grafton Nunes is well represented. Records from the Translation Center tend to focus on individual issues, but there are also files concerning fundraising, publicity, and the many awards granted on a yearly basis.
